Morgan Butte is a drive near, located approximately 15 mile South of Paisley, OR in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. It is topped with a fire lookout cab and a vault toilet. The route is partially paved, but the last 7 or so miles is on well maintained forest service roads that traverse an area burned in fires the summer of 2024. The last mile is gated just past a trail head sign, we parked the van here and walked up the easy last mile.

It was a bit breezy on top but we had great views to the West from our operating position. We spent about an hour on the summit, long enough to get a sunburn on our uncovered legs and were able to work 20,30 and 40M stations. Band conditions were not great and there wasn’t any 2M action to be had, so plan on HF.

This summit was surprisingly easy for only having had one activation prior to N7OLE and I, all the way back in 2017. Regardless, I hope it gets more action, this area of the State is much underutilized and gorgeous in the early summer and late fall.
